Bandung Coffee Exports: Potential and Challenges in the Global Market

Bandung coffee continues to demonstrate its presence in the international market. It boasts three superior varieties: Arabica, Robusta, and Excelsa.

This region’s coffee has distinctive characteristics that make it competitive on the global stage. This was stated by Rifki Maulana, Owner of Point Bandung Coffee Roastery.

He stated that product differentiation is Bandung coffee’s main advantage in the global market. “We have three coffee varieties with distinctive flavors, which provide a wider choice for international consumers,” he said in an interview with RRI on Wednesday (February 16, 2025).

Rifki explained that Bandung coffee’s promotion strategy is implemented through various exhibitions and trade shows, including participation in international coffee competitions.

“We promote this coffee through various events, both domestically and internationally. In recent years, we have also participated in professional coffee competitions and won prizes, which has brought Bandung coffee to the international stage,” Rifki explained.

However, he believes that major challenges remain in coffee export efforts, especially in the upstream production sector. Rifki highlighted the weak supply chain structure and the limitations in meeting large-scale demand quickly.

“The export potential is enormous, not only in Bandung but also in Banyumas as a whole. However, weaknesses in the upstream sector remain a major obstacle,” he said.

Furthermore, the involvement of local farmers is also a crucial factor in maintaining coffee quality, as most coffee farmers still cultivate this crop as a sideline.

“This presents a challenge when there is large demand. However, we overcome this by operating in smaller lots that are more specific in maintaining coffee quality,” said Rifki.

Going forward, Rifki hopes that Bandung coffee can regain its glory as one of the largest coffee producers in Central Java, as it once did. Therefore, he hopes this coffee can grow even larger and more sustainably.

“Of course, support from various parties is needed, including the private sector, the government, and industry players,” he said.
